May’s ‘First Friday’ Breakfast, presented by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce at the Jackson County Agricultural Center featured Dr. Malcolm Gillis.  A scholar and economist of international acclaim, Dr. Gillis is a native of Jackson County.

Serving as president of Rice University from 1993-2004, Gillis spent the first 25 years of his professional life teaching economics in nearly 20 countries, from the U.S. and Canada to Ecuador, Colombia, Ghana, and Indonesia.  A 1958 graduate of Marianna High School and a 1960 graduate of Chipola Jr. College, he received his B. S and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, and served in a variety of faculty and administrative positions at Duke and Harvard.

A member of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas from 1998 to 2006, few people have as much direct insight into the inner workings of our economy than Dr. Gillis, who co-founded and chaired of the Board of Trustees of the Center for World Environment and Sustainable Development, and the Duke Center for Tropical Conservation.

Dr. Gillis, who has authored ten books and published more than seventy articles, shared his knowledge and perspectives about the financial crisis our country is currently experiencing in a speech titled ‘A Perfect Storm: The Financial Crisis of 2007-2009’.
