Malcolm Gillis

featured Dr. Malcolm
Gillis. A scholar and
economist of
international acclaim,
Dr. Gillis is a native
of Jackson County.
Serving as president of
Rice University from
1993-2004, Gillis spent
the first 25 years of
his professional life
teaching economics in
nearly 20 countries,
from the U.S. and Canada
to Ecuador, Colombia,
Ghana, and Indonesia. A
1958 graduate of
Marianna High School and
a 1960 graduate of
Chipola Jr. College, he
received his B. S and
M.A. degrees from the
University of Florida
and his Ph.D. from the
University of Illinois,
and served in a variety
of faculty and
administrative positions
at Duke and Harvard.
A member
of the board of the
Federal Reserve Bank of
Dallas from 1998 to
2006, few people have as
much direct insight into
the inner workings of
our economy than Dr.
Gillis, who co-founded
and chaired of the Board
of Trustees of the
Center for World
Environment and
Sustainable Development,
and the Duke Center for
Tropical Conservation.
Dr.
Gillis, who has authored
ten books and published
more than seventy
articles, shared his
knowledge and
perspectives about the
financial crisis our
country is currently
experiencing in a speech
titled ‘A Perfect
Storm: The Financial
Crisis of 2007-2009’.
